Gowok
Gowok is not your typical period drama. Set in the politically charged era of 1960–1965 Indonesia, the film dives deep into a cultural practice that is as taboo as it is fascinating: the traditional Javanese "gowok" institution, where a woman teaches young men the arts of sexuality before marriage.
At the center of the story is Ratri (portrayed in her youth by Alika Jantinia), a student under the enigmatic Nyai Santi (Lola Amaria). Young Ratri finds herself entangled in a forbidden romance with her fellow student, Denmas Kamanjaya (Devano Danendra). But when love turns to betrayal, her heartbreak plants the seed of a long-held resentment.
Years later, the past resurfaces. Denmas Kamanjaya's mother, the elegant and mysterious Ndoro Ayu (Djenar Maesa Ayu), returns to the gowok house—this time with her grandson, Den Bagus (Ali Fikri). When the now-adult Nyai Ratri (Raihanun) comes face to face once again with the grown Denmas Kamanjaya (Reza Rahadian), she seizes the moment to confront—and perhaps avenge—the wounds of her youth.
Directed by Hanung Bramantyo, Gowok is a bold exploration of sensuality, cultural identity, and the emotional scars left by betrayal. With a rich period setting and lush cinematography, the film reimagines a little-known cultural legacy through a deeply personal lens.
Premiering in the Big Screen Competition at the 2025 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), Gowok has garnered attention for its unflinching portrayal of sexuality and female agency in traditional Javanese society. Due to its adult themes, including scenes of sexual education, emotional violence, and social hierarchy, LSF has classified the film for viewers aged 21 and over. (miq)
