LSF Introduces e-SiAS to Enhance Film Censorship Services and Promote Digital Literacy in Medan
The Indonesian Film Censorship Institution (Lembaga Sensor Film ) is ramping up its commitment to digital innovation and public education with the introduction of e-SiAS, an electronic-based film censorship administration system. In a media literacy and outreach event held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at the Grand Mercure Medan Angkasa Hotel, LSF showcased the new system and emphasized the importance of responsible censorship practices aligned with national law.
The program was designed to raise public awareness about the role of censorship in protecting viewers and to educate participants on using the digital platform effectively. With over 100 attendees including representatives from 24 film communities, universities, vocational schools, and local government bodies the event drew a diverse crowd of content creators and stakeholders in the regional film industry.
One of the event’s highlights was the introduction of e-SiAS, a digital platform developed to streamline and simplify the censorship process for filmmakers. “Through this system, everything from account and film registration to content submission, from payment, report issuance, to final certification, can be done entirely online,” explained Tri Widyastuti Setyaningsih, Chairman of LSF’s Commission I. “There is no need to travel to LSF’s central office in Jakarta. The entire process can be done remotely and is designed to be completed within three working days.”
The e-SiAS platform is accessible to individuals, film communities, educational institutions, and production houses alike. During the event, participants engaged in hands-on practice, including account setup and simulated content submissions. LSF representatives also provided a detailed overview of the platform’s workflow and content standards based on age classification and Indonesian cultural values.
According to Rais Kari, Head of Cultural Heritage Preservation and Management at North Sumatra’s Department of Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, initiatives like these are critical in decentralizing film services and empowering regional filmmakers. “We fully support LSF’s efforts to make film censorship services more accessible to local creators,” he said.
LSF emphasized that to increase literacy about censorship processes is vital, particularly in regions with strong creative potential like North Sumatra. As mandated by Law No. 33 of 2009 on Film, especially Article 57, all films and advertisements must obtain a Surat Tanda Lulus Sensor (STLS) or Censorship Clearance Certificate before being publicly shown or distributed.
“We hope LSF’s direct presence in the regions will foster a stronger legal awareness and a culture of regulatory compliance among filmmakers, " Setyaningsih added. “Especially here in Medan, where the film industry shows a bright near future.”
The event also featured Dr. Immanuel Prasetya Ginting, S.S., M.Hum, as moderator, and was attended by Saptari Novia Stri, S.H., Chairman of LSF’s Legal and Advocacy Sub-Commission, along with representatives from the North Sumatra Regional Broadcasting Commission (KPID), Cultural Heritage Preservation Center, Education Quality Assurance Agency (BPMP), and the Provincial Communication and Information Office.
With the introduction of e-SiAS, LSF not only takes a leap into digital modernization but also strengthens its role as a strategic partner to the creative community, ensuring that film remains a powerful, yet responsible, medium for cultural expression.
